St Paternus Church Bell Appeal

As many will be aware that two of the church bells are in need of some urgent work costing somewhere in the region of £30,000! The second bell, which would normally be struck on the quarter hours, has to have its crack welded, and all the other five bells require renovating, with new fixtures & fittings, as the present ones are coming to the end of their lives. Fortunately the wooden frame from which the bells hang is in good condition. All the bells need re tuning. This all entails lowering the bells to the ground, transporting them to the bell hangers premises, then on to be re-tuned elsewhere. Then of course they have to be rehung, following which there will be a rededication service..

The bells were removed to Taylors Bell Foundry in Loughborough at the end of December 2011.

No 2 bell is going to be recast, and we hope to have them back in the tower by the end of the Spring.

Bell History

The Tower contains a fine peal of six bells, Prior to 1897 there were only five, but in that year a treble bell was added, the forth bell recast and the whole peal of six tuned by Mears and Stainback, Whitechapel Foundary, London in the key of F. The new peal was dedicated by the ven H.H DuBoulay, Archdeacon of Bodmin, on December 22nd 1897. In 1960 the bells were rehung on roller bearings by Mears and Stainback. The wheel of no three bell was damaged in 1975 and was repaired by the Captain of the Tower, Mr. W. J. Aunger and Messrs J. Atkinson and M. J. Aunger.
