CAROLINE mAY wEEKEND

The weekend got under way on Friday 2nd May at St Paternus Church with Lord Paul Tyler and his brother the Rev. John Tyler giving a talk on their great great Aunt's life and work. An informative slide show along with a relaxed talk was experienced by a large gathering and afterwards refreshments were offered at the Village Hall. Much of Caroline's magnificent work was on show, and an enjoyable evening was had by all.
The following day a mobile Skateboard Park was setup at the School for the use of the younger parishioners on their respective BMX bilkes and Skateboards. The event was well attended and good weather prevailed even though the forecast was for rain.
The Weekend ended with a Parish Walk on Sunday afternoon that took in areas that it was known Caroline herself walked and took studies of plants. Although the sky darkened and light drizzle began to fall, 60 people turned up. All were rewarded with the weather settling and a marvellously organised walk that started at Michael Screech's Farm, down to the banks of the River Inney and over Trekelland Bridge. From there the walk continued past Trelaske Lodge and followed the old drive that used to lead right up to Trelaske Manor. This part of the walk turned slightly muddy as some tree felling work was taking place in the forestry.
A gentle climb out of the woods ensued until we reached the wonderful open parkland that was once part of the large Trelaske estate. Trelaske House sat serenely in the distance and one could only wonder at the sight it must have been in Caroline's time when it was twice the size it is today and was known as Trelaske Manor the seat of the Archer's.
On reaching Trelaske House, a deserved rest with refreshments was taken and the present owners Robert and Elizabeth Ashford went out of their way with their hospitality and gave a guided tour around the grounds. The way back was taken by the unclassified road via
Trelaske Mill and back to Trekelland Bridge, where we rejoined the route back to Honiton Farm.
More refreshments were on hand and everyone agreed that it had been a memorable experience on a delightful afternoon.
